Maxim Mocha Gold Coffee Mix: How Much Water per Stick?

맥심 모카골드 마일드 커피믹스maeksim mokagoldeu maildeu keopimikseu
Short answer
  • Hot coffee: Empty one 12 g stick into a cup, pour in 90–100 ml (about 3 US fl oz) of hot water and stir until it dissolves.

From the maker’s directions. Full steps and sources below.

Maxim Mocha Gold (맥심 모카골드) is the instant coffee mix Dongsuh Foods launched in Korea in 1989.[9][10] Each 12 g stick holds coffee, sugar and creamer, so you only add hot water. Abroad it’s usually sold as Maxim Mocha Gold Mild, in boxes of 100 sticks (1.2 kg).[3][5][6]

Contains milk. Stores abroad often call the creamer “non-dairy”, but the Korean label lists milk protein (농축우유단백분말) and says 우유 함유, contains milk.[1][2][3][5]

How to make it

Hot coffee [1][3]

  1. Tear open one stick (12 g) and empty it into a cup.
  2. Pour in 90–100 ml of hot water, about 3 to 3.4 US fluid ounces.
  3. Stir until the powder has completely dissolved, then drink.

The Korean box gives 90–100 ml,[1] and a US Walmart listing says one stick makes 3 fl oz (about 90 ml).[3] An Australian wholesaler suggests 150 ml and says to adjust to taste;[5] more water just makes it weaker and less sweet. Maxim’s decaf coffee mix asks for about 80 ml,[16] so check the box you have.

Directions, ingredients and storage from the Korean pack text on E-mart’s SSG listing; the use-by line from Costco Korea.[1][2] The 13.3% is the coffee’s share of the mix, not milk.

How much caffeine?

The box doesn’t print a caffeine figure.[1][2] When the Korea Consumer Agency tested 12 coffee mixes in 2014, they averaged 52.2 mg of caffeine per stick, from 40.9 to 77.2 mg.[11][12][13] The results table printed by the Korean trade paper Food & Beverage News lists Mocha Gold Mild at 42.5 mg; we found that figure in one place only.[11] In the agency’s 2024 test, Mocha Gold Mild was one of six regular coffee mixes,[14] and the most caffeinated regular mix had 53.8 mg per stick.[14][15] For comparison, the reports give Korea’s recommended daily maximum as 400 mg of caffeine.[12][11][14]

Other Maxim sticks

  • Maxim White Gold and Maxim Original are sold abroad too, for example in a Walmart box with all three.[18]
  • Maxim also makes a decaf coffee mix (디카페인),[16][17] which asks for about 80 ml of water.[16]
  • In Korea, Dongsuh also sells lower-sugar versions: Mocha Gold Light and the sugar-free Mocha Gold Simple Latte.[19]

Shops abroad sum up the ingredients as coffee, sugar and non-dairy creamer, with no Contains line.[3][5] The full Korean list puts sugar first, then a creamer made with coconut oil and milk protein, then coffee.[1][2] One US seller lists the stick as 11.8 g; the Korean box says 12 g.[7]
