Allergens on Korean-language packs

Korean packs list allergens after 알레르기 유발물질 (allergens), usually ending in 함유 (contains). A line with 같은 제조시설 means the food is made in the same facility as the foods listed. Tap a word to hear it.

Questions

Does ssamjang have peanuts?

Often, yes. The ssamjang labels we found in Australia and the EU list peanut, along with soy and wheat, and an O’Food ssamjang was recalled in Canada because peanut wasn’t properly declared. We couldn’t find the US label text, so read your tub every time.

Is gochujang gluten-free?

Usually not. CJ’s US gochujang lists wheat flour and says it contains wheat and soy. Daesang’s O’Food tub has no wheat in its ingredient list, but listings disagree on its allergen line and it is not labelled gluten-free.

Which Korean instant noodles list shellfish?

Of the noodles we cover, Nongshim Chapagetti’s US label lists shrimp, along with wheat, soy and sesame.

Is Korean soy sauce gluten-free?

Not the usual kinds. Both Sempio soy sauces we cover are made with wheat.

This page compares what labels say. It isn’t medical advice. If you have a serious allergy, follow your doctor’s advice and the label on your pack.
